This is from an email 'conversation' I had with a friend ...
Well I've had some time to flick through a few books to help me 'remember' my thoughts on 'Love Under Will' and it turns out that my readings on the Qabalah (in all it's versions of spellings) was the most helpful in this ... which is not surprising really as the term is a Crowleyism. "Love is the Law. Love under Will"
Crowley 'talks' a lot about will and seems to define Will as meaning True Will ... "A Man whose conscious Will is at odds with his True Will is wasting his strength. He cannot hope to influence his environment efficiently ... A man who is doing his True Will has the inertia of the Universe to assist him"
Many spiritual traditions see the Universe coming into existence through the Will of God/dess/Divinity. In this way True Will can be seen as guided by Divinity. Will also infers choice.
Love may be the Law (this may have derived from a Qabalist formula using the numerological value of letters - 93 is the number of the word Law, Will (Thelema) & Love (Agape)) but Love without direction or True Will (Divine guidance) is stagnant.
On the Qabalistic Tree of Life Gervurah is the ability to choose and to exercise free will.
Many greater minds than mine have questioned the existence of free will, so I won't go there ... but from a spiritual perspective we can 'see' Free Will as being True Will and without or being driven by ego which, if we accept it as being divine in essence, requires faith & belief in what we cannot know ... God/dess/Divinity. Or to put Free Will another way, our Divine or True Path.
I agree with what you Hilary about Love being supreme ... I see Love as how we humans experience the Divine Cosmic Energy ... that which 'drives' the Universe. We humans connect with what we have come to 'know' and 'feel' as Love but of course that is most likely to be just one facet of the source of Divinity. Crowley says in "LIber Samekh" "... The Adept must be ready for the utter destruction of his point-of-view on any subject, and even that of his innate conception of forms and laws of thought. Thus, he may find that his Angel considers his "business" or his "love" to be absurd trifles; also, that human ideas of "time" are invalid, and human "laws' of logic applicable only to the relations between illusions"
This is very Chaos Magick. My take on an aspect of this (there are many there but no time for all of them) is that the Universe is Paradoxical in nature. So Love is everything AND nothing.
To put all this in a nut shell ... when we find our True Path/Will & we have Love is our hearts, Love propells/expands our actions and thoughts, therefore Love is propelled/expanded by our Will. Love under Will.
I don't see the word 'under' as meaning being in a lower position or inferring inferiority but rather as meaning within, sustaining, supporting and "in the form of" as when we say "under control" ... Love takes the form of our Will, our True Divine Will. |
