Ecstatic Dance is still relatively new in Australia but there is a large and growing Ecstatic Dance community in the U.S.A., the U.K. and Europe with many accredited teachers running regular classes and workshops. There is however a growing community of similarly passionate dancers here in Australia.

I am personally interested in nurturing this community here in Sydney and to help do this I have created a yahoo group, EcstaticDancin. As the group grows it will hopefully be used by the community for discussion, and for sharing information about regular classes, workshops, trainings and special events.

If you would like to be part of this community click here to join at the EcstaticDancin home page!
So, what is Ecstatic Dance?

Ecstatic Dance is a general term used to cover many different styles of spontaneous movement. Often this kind of practice can be used as a tool in our self development. When we experience movement as a spiritual expression - uniting body with spirit - we become connected to the essence of Self. Ecstatic Dance can become a language through which our body is able to express our deepest emotions and desires, and often it is the first time our body is allowed to tell it like it really is ... or was!
Ecstatic Dance can
be Fun
               Painful
         Joyful
                  Scary
            Playful
   Intimate
Lonely
      Sacred
     and much
                more ...
Ecstatic Dance is a kinetic encounter with our own psyche and can be as powerful and as transforming as we want it to be because we are dancing our own dance.

I guess it is easier to say what Ecstatic Dance is not. It is not like dancing in a disco or performing on a stage. There are no steps or routines to learn. There is no special music. There is no right or wrong way to experience it. There is absolutely no dance experience required and no fitness requirements or age limitations.
What are some of the different styles?

It is widely believed that humans have been dancing ecstatically since we were living in caves and there are many cultures today who still practice ancient and traditional styles of Ecstatic or Trance Dancing. However, there are many modern styles of Ecstatic Dance which have evolved out of a deep understanding of these age old practices and the dance has developed a new relationship with what it is to be human in this day and age.

This is by no means a definitive list and these sites are not necessarily the first word on each style ... but this is merely a place to start.
